FreeSkate – Shove It Like It’s The 90's
Skate through procedurally generated chaos in this fast-paced, retro-inspired trick fest made for Game-Like Jam 04! Choose your mode—FreeSkate, Cone Trial, or the brutal Hard Mode!—and rack up points with stylish Pop-Shove Its, speed boosts, and flawless rail grinds. Hit palm trees and lamp posts? Lose health. Nail tricks while boosted? Double your score. Slalom through cones for time bonuses, and don’t forget to collect all 5 SKATE letters for epic point gains.
Smooth controls across keyboard, gamepad, and touchscreen make this one wild ride whether you're chillin' at home or grinding on the go.
• Arrow keys / D-Pad: Move • Space / A Button: Pop-Shove It • Touchscreen: Built-in movement + trick controls
Modes:
• FreeSkate – Perform tricks to build score. Use ramps, rails, and power-ups. Avoid obstacles and bad rail angles. Speed Boost doubles score temporarily.
• Cone Trial – Slalom between cones. +1 point for passing through, -1 for missing. Final score = time minus penalty points.
• Hard Mode! – Same as Cone Trial but with no health pickups. Maximum risk!
Bonus: • Collect 5 SKATE items in order. • Collect with Speed Boost for massive bonus points.
All music and assets were created by Stcash. All music and assets (except the cones) were made during the jam period.
Update 001: Fixed bug that caused the car to run over the player when starting a new run.
Post-Jam Development Roadmap
Thank you for trying out the jam version of FreeSkate, created for Game-Like Jam 04. While the current build showcases core gameplay mechanics and musical elements, several additional features were planned but could not be implemented within the jam timeframe. I intend to integrate these enhancements in future updates:
- Sound Effects: The game presently features background music only. Environmental and gameplay-specific sound effects—including trick landings, rail grinds, and collision impacts—are under development.
- Collision Animations: Visual feedback for interactions with ramps, cones, and obstacles is being expanded to include expressive animations for all collision types.
- Environmental Hazards: A coconut drop mechanic is planned, introducing falling objects from palm trees to add dynamic challenge and reactive gameplay.
- Grind Visuals: Spark effects for rail grinding will be introduced to enhance player feedback and visual appeal during trick execution.
- Additional Trick: The trick library will be expanded to include at least one more maneuver, further diversifying gameplay and scoring strategies.
- Collision Debugging: Minor inconsistencies in collision detection and object overlap behavior are being addressed to improve accuracy and playability.

Very fun! Love the leaderboard feature 😍 We wanted to add something like that to our game, but couldn't figure out how to make that work 😅
Incredible complex game for a month of development, great job. I kinda struggle wiht the 90 degres turn. I feel that breaks a little the flow. I enjoyed the music too :)
